What’s it all About?

“Little Liza Jane” is a song that was sung while working on a boat, sometimes called a “shanty” (or spelled “chantey”). Singing helped workers keep in rhythm with each other as they worked together. The song may have also been sung by enslaved African Americans during their leisure time or while working in the fields.
